Kanebo Sensai Cellular Performance Cream Foundation Review + Swatches + Video!

Above: Kanebo Sensai Cellular Performance Cream Foundation in Natural Beige.

My love for foundation knows no bounds...the fact that a little jar can hold the promise of skin perfection is just so alluring!  In turn, I have tried an insane amount of formulas.  During my search, I have discovered many options that I find delightful...from Tom Ford and SK-II to Hourglass and even Revlon, foundation has come a long way from the thick and powdery options offered to our grandmothers.  Despite having formulas that I adore, however, I have resigned myself to the fact that I should likely always be "on the hunt" for the next best release to integrate into my rotation.

Above: The foundation, like all Sensai products, comes in luxe silver packaging.

Enter Kanebo Sensai Cellular Performance Cream Foundation, which I picked up at the Kanebo counter at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills about a month ago.  Retailing for $80, this foundation offers both cutting-edge skincare (it is designed to moisturize and firm the skin) and phenomenal, skin-like coverage!

Above: The full ingredients list...there is no added scent (thankfully!) and the sunscreen is physical (titanium dioxide).

Boasting a 50% moisture content, this foundation glides on the skin with ease (I apply with a Beauty Blender...my video at towards the bottom of the post demonstrates the process!) and leaves a finish that melds with the skin instantly.

I deem this foundation medium coverage that is buildable to full.  Despite the fact that it contains mineral oil, I find that it is in no way irritating to my extremely sensitive skin...not a single breakout and, if anything, my skin has become smoother and clearer with regular use!  If feels light and breathable upon application and, even with the mineral oil content, does not slide around as the hours pass.

Above: I use the spatula to transfer the foundation from the jar to a little sample container for easy access.

I also appreciate that the foundation, which comes in a sturdy glass jar, also includes a little spatula for scooping out the foundation, which I decant into a sample container each week.  This cuts down on the inherent mess and potential contamination that can spawn from opening a jar and touching the product regularly.

Above: The Cellular Performance Cream Foundation is almost like a gel-cream hybrid in terms of texture.  It reminds me a bit of Chantecaille's future skin (the one in the jar) but with MUCH better coverage and lasting power.

The cream formula is utterly luxurious.  I find it similar to the SK-II in terms of look and texture, but the Kanebo Sensai is more emollient and truly becomes "one with the skin" with minimal effort, whereas the SK-II, while lovely, has a more matte, "foundation-esque" finish.  It is high-definition in nature...seamlessly blending and virtually imperceptible to the naked eye!  Additionally, the lasting power is quite formidable...I get 8-10 hours of oxidation-free wear that only necessitates a couple of powder touch ups throughout the day.

Compared to some other foundations I adore, this has:

Although there are only eight shades in this formula (which cater to light and medium to medium-tan skin tones only...at least at this point!), I am quite impressed with the natural and realistic undertones this limited spectrum embodies.  I have found an absolutely perfect match with Natural Beige, which is suitable for N 23-25 and NC 23-25 skin tones.  It has semi-yellow undertones (rather than rosy) but also contains enough neutrality to mimic the complex dimensions of the face.

I was able to get samples of two additional shades (Warm Beige and Amber Beige) to swatch and juxtaposed them against two similar shade options from the Dior Airflash line (also spectacular!).

On a completely unrelated side note, I am so glad that Dior released the shade #201 Linen in Airflash recently...it is perfect for NC 23-25 skin and, up until now, the only yellow-undertone option was #301 which is much better suited to NC 30 skin.  Review of this formula in its new shade soon!

Above and below: Swatches of Dior Airflash and Kanebo Sensai Cellular Performance Cream Foundation in direct sunlight.  All of these shades fall in the NC 23-35 range...from top to bottom:

1. Sensai Amber Beige: NC 35-40

2. Sensai Warm Beige: NC 27-30

3. Sensai Natural Beige: NC 23-25

4. Dior Airflash #201 Linen: NC 23-25

5. Dior Airflash #301 Sand: NC 27-30

Above: Coupled with NARS Light Reflecting Pressed Powder

Above: Alone with minimal makeup...this picture best depicts its inherently dewy finish.

Above: With Serge Lutens Teint Si Fin Powder in O40 dusted lightly top.

Above: At the end of an 8 hour teaching day...this formula holds up remarkably well!

Above: Mid-day in humid heat at the Getty Villa in Malibu.

Bottom Line: I love this foundation...the gorgeous medium coverage, skin-conditioning ingredients and dewy, yet lasting wear.  The only drawbacks I can think of for this formula are that it is a bit pricy, the shades are limited (though the ones that exist and extremely well-executed) and it is also quite difficult it is to find in stores.  As far as I know, it can only be purchased stateside at the Kanebo counter at Neiman Marcus (if you know of other options, please list them in the comments!).  Those caveats aside, I highly recommend this foundation...if you are looking for flawless coverage and a truly skin-like finish, this is the one to try!

Today marks my last official week of "school year teaching" and I am so excited about my upcoming Beauty Professor blog posts!

Here is a quick preview of topics on the imminent horizon...

Above: This bag is large enough to fit a plethora of items for poolside lounging...water bottle, sunscreen, makeup, sunglasses, extra shirt and visor; it's utterly cavernous.
First, I will be using this divine bag (above...procured from the latest Neiman Marcus beauty event, Camp Gorgeous) to tote around my pool essentials when I head to Tucson next week.  I will be covering a my beauty essentials packing list, which, in this case, will be tailored to inordinately hot and dry weather.

Above: My new Madison Harding x Lust for Life collaboration Olivia booties...so immediately comfortable that they didn't even need to be broken in!

Next, I will be talking about a the summer shoe shopping I've been imbibing in as of late.  A little Madison Harding, a pinch of Vince Camuto, a lot of Jeffery Campbell...no, it's not makeup, but it does make for amusing conversation, no?!

Above: Olivia of the style blog, Lust for Life and me at a recent Mark Jacobs event...I have had Olivia as a student at the college and am proud of her boot endeavor!

Above: MAC All About Orange...what did YOU pick up from the collection?
Following, will be an exploration of the temporary insanity that washed over me the day I happened to be at Nordstrom to pick up shoes and a gift for a co-worker and walked out with three peachy coral MAC lipsticks and two blushes (not to mention a lipstick and blush for my mom).  More on this All About Orange debacle soon...
Above: All 16 shades of the Hourglass Immaculate Foundation, resplendent on my laptop.
Finally, and this post may come before all of the aforementioned (should I get an immediate chance to label the copious amount of images)...swatches of all 16 shades of the Hourglass Immaculate Foundation (reviewed HERE).  I am positively giddy at the chance to feature another exhaustive shade range for a foundation I adore!
    Above: Swatching on the mind.

Above: Sample jars, pre-swatching...I almost hated to sully their pristine state by opening them!

Above: Swatch City...and a bit of MAC Flamingo on the lips.

Also, I by request, I have plans to discuss the brushes (including the quintessential non-brush, the Beauty Blender!) I have been using lately as well as providing an overview of how to determine your skin tone to find your perfect foundation match...so much to do (including a bevy of by-request videos for my YouTube channel!), and a whole summer in which to make it a reality!

What's new with you this week?  Thoughts?  New purchases?  Summer plans?

IMMACULATE LIQUID POWDER FOUNDATION (Press Release)

THE MIRACLE FOUNDATION FOR OILY SKIN
NO SHINE. NO POWDER. NO BLOTTING. JUST IMMACULATE.

A BREAKTHROUGH LIQUID TO POWDER FORMULA THAT ABSORBS OIL, CAMOUFLAGES IMPERFECTIONS, AND DELIVERS A LONG-LASTING VELVET MATTE FINISH—WITHOUT THE NEED FOR TOUCHUPS. IN A CONSUMER STUDY, IMMACULATE’S ADVANCED FORMULA HAS BEEN SHOWN TO ACTUALLY IMPROVE THE APPEARANCE OF OILY, ACNEIC SKIN.

    SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE:$55
AVAILABLE AT:  Sephora, Sephora.com, Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Space NK

    PRODUCT CLAIMS and RESEARCH FINDINGS:
    ·       The high-tech foundation absorbs oil and camouflages imperfections, while its unparalleled velvet matte finish eliminates the need for powder, blotting tissues or constant touch-ups throughout the day.
    ·       The ingredient Cashmere Kaolinite Clay plays an integral role. The advanced new clay offers exceptional oil absorption—absorbing 75% of its weight in sebum while retaining moisture in the skin.
    ·       The oil-free, humidity-proof, water-resistant formula transforms from liquid to powder and dries down instantly to a long-wearing, velvet matte finish that never looks dull or flat.
    ·       Unlike matte foundations of old, Immaculate’s superfine treated pigments provide unsurpassed coverage without looking cakey or mask-like.
    ·       Ideal for oily or blemish-prone complexions or those seeking a buildable medium to full coverage foundation with a velvet matte finish.
    ·       In spring 2013, Hourglass commissioned an independent study to document the foundation’s astonishing short- and long-term skin benefits. Based on a 4-week consumer study of 30 women with oily, acne-prone skin, Immaculate demonstrated dramatic visible improvements:
o   100% reported an improvement in overall skin appearance and skin smoothness
o   100% reported that the product worked without drying skin out
o   83% reported a decrease in oil production and the need for touch-ups
o   80% reported a visible improvement in acne scars
o   70% reported a visible improvement in pore size
o   63% reported a reduction in the severity of breakouts
    ·       Contains clinical levels of two advanced, anti-aging ingredients: Phytostem Edelweiss and Lavandox.
    ·       Phytostem Edelweiss, an active derived from a rare Alpine plant, slows collagen degradation and reduces wrinkle depth by 15% after 20 days of use.
    ·       Lavandox, an ingredient extracted from Spanish lavender, reduces the appearance of wrinkles by 11% after 24 hours of application. Also inhibits muscle contractions which lead to fine lines and wrinkles.
    ·       Free of oil, parabens, phthalates, synthetic dyes, gluten and fragrance. Vegan. No animal testing.
    ·       For best results, apply with an Hourglass Foundation brush. Work in sections of the face, apply and immediately blend.

    Packing List: Destination Desert

Above: My desert beauty "must haves."  All items fit effortlessly into my Neiman Marcus "Camp Gorgeous" bag...I'll be using this all summer, indeed!

Packing is an inordinate challenge for me...anytime I travel, my goal is to establish the prefect balance between options and excess.  Many times, this regrettably does not occur.  However, sometimes, said balance is achieved!

For my most recent trip to Tucson, Arizona, I was able to carefully edit down my beauty "must haves" to a streamlined collection, perfectly tailored to an extremely hot desert environment.

Kindly scroll on for images and descriptions...

Above: My most recent sunglass purchase...these timeless oversized Chloe "Havana" sunglasses are a rare blend of black and brown and feel very comfortable on the face.  Even in intense heat, these don't slide down my nose! They keep me from squinting and protect my sensitive, contact-lens-wearing eyes.
Above: The Rachel K CC Cream in Neutral is a fantastic base for skin facing extreme weather conditions.  This lightly tinted, SPF 35 (physical sunscreen), mattifying and waterproof cream is a powerful base that helps my foundation to stay put in a sweat-inducing atmosphere.  Full review of this Korean cult favorite very soon!
Above: The Amore Pacific Color Control Cushion Compact in #104 adds protective foundation coverage that is light and lasting, especially when set with SPF 40 Sulwhasoo Brightening Powder Compact.  This combination gives me a flawless finish that lasts the entire day.
Above: Even if the SPF protection of the Rachel K CC Cream, Amore Pacific CC Cream and Sulwhasoo Powder have a combined SPF of over 100 (is that even possible?), a SPF 50 hat made by Helen Kaminski is the final barrier to make sure that harmful rays of sun have no chance whatsoever of touching my face.
Above: I love YSL Rouge Volupte in #1...this pinky beige features lush full coverage and perhaps may be one of the most flattering nudes ever crafted.  It creates a sophisticated lip that is polished without looking overdone.
Above: I am on my second tube of Tom Ford gloss in Naked...hydrating and creamy, this creates the quintessential shiny pale pout.
Above: Vogue and Coco Chanel's biography...poolside reading at its most chic ; )
Above: Purely physical sunscreen is immensely difficult to find these days...I was happy to stumble upon this SPF 50 version by Cerave.  I will be using this on my body all summer long!
Above: The Caudalie Beauty Elixir is so refreshing when sprayed on the face...it wakes me up and imparts a natural glow.
Above:  I always have a large silk scarf in my possession...it is excellent for extra sun protection and can also help to create a classy impromptu hairstyle.

Above: The products in action...freshly applied (in lower left corner), doing their job (in the top right corner), the gorgeous pool (in lower right corner) and after 6 hours outdoor in 105 degree weather (in the top left corner).  Everything held up remarkably well!

Bottom Line: Due to the extreme heat and rural terrain, desert vacations can be very low maintenance.  Although they may not demand a plethora of beauty products, a few key items are a must.  Oversized sunglasses, a protective foundation base, a wide-brimmed hat, a glossy nude lip, some fabulous reading material, serious SPF, a refreshing facial mist and a multi-purposed silk scarf collectively make my time in this arid wonderland a beautiful experience!

What are some of YOUR vacation must-haves?

  • Dior DiorSkin Airflash Foundation in #201...Review and Video Tutorial

    $

    0

During my foundation quest, I have used Dior Airflash off and on for a couple of years.  Despite the rather disturbing notion of spraying a foundation onto one's face (much like a can of paint), I was initially impressed by this product's seamless finish and demi-matte, skin-like texture that softens lines and lasts a respectable eight+ hours in a variety of weather conditions.  Since this product has been on the market for years, I don't think my review on this formula will be novel; however, I hope to contribute to the conversation with regards to the new shade release (#201) and my favorite way of applying this!

Retailing for $62, three potential caveats of this foundation are the steep price, complexity of application and how quickly one can run through a 2.3 ounce can of this perfecting elixir.  I have found that with occasional usage (4-6 times a month) and appropriate application, a single can of this foundation can last nearly four months.

After experimenting with a variety application processes (e.g., spraying it directly on the face, spraying it onto a sponge and then applying etc.), I have experienced the absolute best results when I spray it on a foundation brush (in my case, the Sephora Airbrush #56) and buff it into my face.

Dior Airflash in #201 Linen is a fortuitous release...it is a fantastic yellow-based beige that should have been released years ago (when one takes into account the popularity of Dior's Linen shade in other foundation formulas).  It is between NC 23 and NC 25 and doesn't oxidize once applied.  For years, I wore #301 Sand (NC 27-30) because it was the only shade that had warm yellow undertones and a shade semi-close to my skin tone depth; sadly, however, Sand was often a bit too dark and had to be lightened with powders or primers.  The arrival of #201 Linen has changed this plight and I know I am not the only one pleased with this addition!

Texturally, this foundation is incredibly light while simultaneously providing excellent, buildable medium coverage.  Although fragrance is included in the ingredients list, it is a challenge to detect it once applied.  Even though it doesn't boast any skin care benefits, and, in contrast, contains some questionable chemicals, my skin thankfully hasn't encountered an ounce of irritation over years of intermittent usage.

There is a reason that Dior Airflash has remained on the market for so many years without a major revamp or reformulation...this foundation's efficacy is undeniable!  It works with a variety of skin types (e.g., dry, combination, oily, sensitive, young skin, aging skin etc.) and melds with the skin in a way that transcends that of traditional liquid foundations.

Kindly scroll on for product images, a copious amount of comparison swatches and my video review (which includes additional thoughts on this formula and a tutorial for application)...

Above: This sleek silver box houses the Airflash, which comes in a 2.3 ounce aerosol canister.

Above: Linen #201 is Dior's answer to NC 25...I cannot believe it took the company this long to release this in-demand shade!

Above: The full ingredients list...anything facial product containing Butane is a bit daunting to say the least, but I haven't experienced any immediate or long term irritation from usage.

Above: The spray nozzle resists buildup and is simple to operate, making this foundation safe for your bag!

The following images reveal comparison swatches of Airflash #201 and #301 (as well as commensurate shades in the Kanebo Sensai Cellular Performance Cream Foundation) in various lighting situations...

Above: Linen and Sand in direct sunlight...Linen is close to NC 25 and Sand is approximately NC 30.

Above: I am currently NC 25 and my most flawless matches in the lineup above are Kanebo Sensai Natural Beige and Airflash 201 Linen.

Above: Swatches (ranging from NC 25-NC 35) in outdoor shade.

Above: If I get a bit more color (thereby pushing me over the edge to NC 30+), then Airflash Sand #301 will be a perfect match.

    Above: In outdoor indirect light.

Above: Happy in direct sunlight ; )

Bottom Line: Dior Airflash is a fascinating foundation incarnation.  From the rather large aerosol can to the next-to-nothing mist expelled, this anomaly produces a lasting, lovely, medium-coverage skin finish with a few sprays and a round of buffing.  Although some of the chemical ingredients are less than desirable, the overall effect makes this foundation a worthy candidate for intermittent usage.  It has a thin texture that evens skin tone and blurs fine lines without settling or caking and once one masters the knack of application, this foundation becomes a viable choice for anyone seeking a bright, matte-yet-glowing, balanced complexion that lasts for hours.  Highly recommended!

    EYES

    • I patted Serge Lutens Quant-a-Soi around the orbital region to even skin and add a light white glow.
    • I then created a winged liquid liner look with Le Metier de Beaute Indelible Inks Liner in Artemis, a deep indigo blue (note the step by step process below).
    • I added a lightly smudged line of Chantecaille Waterproof Eyeliner in Orchid, a blue-tinged purple, very close to my lower lash line.
    • I applied Rouge Bunny Rouge Feline Gaze liner in Salome along my lower lash waterline.
    • I applied two coats of Le Volume de Chanel Mascara on my upper and lower lashes.

    LIPS:

Above: Tom Ford Scarlet Rouge with Rouge Bunny Rouge Vasco applied around the edges of the mouth to soften the shade and make it more wearable.

The following images reflect the look in various lighting situations...

Bottom Line: I hope you have a wonderful 4th of July weekend, celebrating joyously with friends and family.  We are truly blessed to live in this great country and may we remember that today and always!

Above: The three creme blushes I chose...Inspiration, Revelation and Destiny.

Chanel's Fall 2013 Collection arrived at counters a couple of weeks ago and, since then, the Internet has been buzzing with excitement regarding the cadre of creme blushes in a spectrum of stunning shades.  Of course, the collection also includes the requisite eye shadows, nail polishes and lip color (to be reviewed soon!), but the blushes are what initially lured me to my nearest Nordstrom!

Upon arrival, I assumed that I would buy one, two at maximum; however, upon experiencing their delightful texture and pigmentation, I knew I couldn't leave without three...

    • Inspiration (a pale baby pink)
    • Revelation (a pinky coral creme)
    • Destiny (a clutch decision...this rosy bronze tan can be used as a contour shade and bronzer!)

Above: Inspiration, Revelation and Destiny in direct sunlight.
Retailing for $38, this creme blush comes in the sleek black compact packaging we've come to expect from Chanel.  Each compact houses 2.5 grams of product and contains a generous square mirror useful for application and touch ups.  The formula is decidedly creamy (which is apropos for a cream blush!) and extremely pigmented.

Additionally, it lacks the shimmery properties often associated with a cream product (in turn standing in stark contrast to another favorite, the much more luminescent LMdB Creme Fresh Tint for Lips and Eyes).  Instead, it dries down to a satin-matte finish that glows without the use of traditional light-reflecting particles.  When applied with a stippling brush (see my video tutorial, embedded further down in this post), this blush lasts a respectable 6-8 hours without fading or migrating.

Thankfully, it does not contain fragrance and the relatively brief list of ingredients (featured below) have not in any way irritated my sensitive skin or caused excessive oiliness, which is often a risk with creme products.

Above: The full ingredients list for the creme flush formula.

Above: The compact comes in a signature Chanel velvet sheath.

Scroll on for images and swatches of Inspiration, Revelation and Destiny as well as my video review/tutorial for this formula and the Bottom Line...

Above: Inspiration is a pale baby pink.

Above: A swatch of Inspiration in direct sunlight.  Since purchasing these blushes, I have found myself using Inspiration the most since it is the most subtle and is an excellent compliment for bronzer.

Above: Revelation is a pinky coral creme.

Above: Swatches of Inspiration and Revelation in direct sunlight...although these shades may look similar in the pan, side by side swatches reveal that Revelation is much deeper and brighter, making it a wonderful shade to wear on its own.

Above: Destiny is a rosy bronze tan.

Above: Swatches of all three shades...Destiny can multitask as a creamy contour or warm, rosy bronzer!

Above: Swatches of all three shades in outdoor shade.

Above: Chanel Destiny (for contour) and Inspiration (for a pink glow) on the cheeks.

Above: Chanel Destiny and Revelation on the cheeks (applied 5 hours earlier!) in extreme heat...who says target practice in the desert can't involve a dash of Chanel?!

Bottom Line: The Chanel Fall 2013 Collection yields delightful surprises...the creme blushes are pigmented, silky and long lasting, creating a shimmer-free radiance that lights up the face in a natural way that is suitable for every day use.  I highly recommend the three shades that I picked up...Inspiration is the pale pink towards which I gravitate daily, Revelation adds a believable flush that is beautiful by itself and Destiny can be used for both contouring and enhancing a tan.  Dare I ask, what else does one need for cheeks?!

Keep your eyes peeled for a post and video covering my lipstick selections from this collection (hint: Icone and Secret!)...what did YOU pick up from the Chanel Fall 2013 offerings?

RoC Ambassador Musings...Products I Love, a Fabulous Interview with Dr. Erin Gilbert + a Giveaway!

Above: My RoC Ambassador welcome basket!

Imagine my surprise and delight when I was informed that I was chosen to be a 2013-2013 RoC Skincare Ambassador!  Known for their advancements with Retinol delivery, RoC's anti-aging products are simply fantastic; they are cutting-edge, potent and make the fight against aging skin an affordable experience.  To get me started, I was sent a fabulous welcome basket, filled to the brim with RoC products and a few other goodies!

Above: Yes,  Jethro and I were quite surprised upon receiving the news.

I am happy to share this distinction with some 19 other brilliant beauty bloggers including:

Above: A closeup of some of the wonderful RoC products I've had the chance to try as of late...

Over the past few months, I have really enjoyed my experience with RoC products...I must admit, my skincare regimen is rather eclectic; that is, I don't use exclusively use products from a single line.  That being said, I have encountered great success with both the RoC Retinol Correxion Sensitive Eye Cream and the RoC Daily Resurfacing Disks.

I am finally at a point in my life where I cannot escape the necessity for eye cream.  In the past, I rationalized that whatever facial serum I used would also be active in my orbital area (I acknowledge the somewhat faulty logic there) but now I've acquiesced to the fact that I need something targeted for the skin around my eyes.

The RoC Correxion Sensitive Eye Cream caters to one who may have qualms about the potential side effects of retinol (e.g., dryness, redness, peeling etc.).  Dabbed carefully around my eye area every couple of nights, the retinol concentration is potent enough to smooth fine lines but gentle enough to do so without the expected irritation associated with a traditional retinol product!

The Daily Resurfacing Disks were also a pleasant discovery!  This exfoliation-oriented product features two-sided texturized pads that are self-foaming to cleanse the skin, while delivering a refining effect that truly makes my skin glow.  They remind me a bit of both the Somme Institute Transport Pads and Peter Thomas Roth Un-wrinkle pads in terms of purpose and experience but the size and scope of these disks are significantly better because they simultaneously remove makeup and smooth the skin.

Above: The texturized side exfoliates away dirt, oil and complexion-dulling impurities.

Above: The smooth and soft side gently cleanses and removes makeup around the delicate eye area.

    According to clinical tests:

    • In one week, the appearance of fine lines is reduced and skin tone and texture is improved
    • After four weeks, signs of photo-aging appear diminished
    • After 12 weeks, the appearance of wrinkles and pores is diminished

Above: Jethro and I are happy about this.

All in all, these two products have been a very positive inclusion in my daily routine, giving me smoother, more radiant skin that glows without traditional retinol irritation!

Above: In addition to practicing dermatology in NYC, Dr. Erin Gilbert works closely with RoC Skincare to develop and research new products.

As a part of my Ambassador privileges, I recently had the opportunity to interview esteemed New York  City Dermatologist Dr. Erin Gilbert, who provided me with some extremely enlightening information regarding anti-aging strategies, ingredients and products.  Read on for our Q and A:

Q (Beauty Professor): What are the three most important things a woman can do to fight the effects of facial aging?

A (Dr. Gilbert): "Sunscreen, retinol and antioxidants.  Sunscreen and retinol are key components to any anti-aging regimen because they are important in preserving collage and preventing hyper pigmentation.  Collagen preservation and stimulation, as well as superficial textural changes, are going to be prevented by the retinol.  With regular sunscreen use, your collagen is going to be protected and wrinkles are going to be avoided."

Q (BP): What ingredients should a consumer look for when selecting an effective anti-aging product?

A (Dr. G): "Retinols are vitamin A derived, so Vitamin A is something to look for if you are interested in a retinol-type product.  Vitamin E has antioxidants as well as moisturizing effects.  I would also look for the antioxidant vitamin D."

Q (BP): What is your favorite product for keeping the lips moisturized and fine lines at bay?

A (Dr. G): "I actually like Neutrogena Naturals Lip Balm, Vaseline Lip Balm SPF 30 an dElta MD.  These are some really great options."

Q (BP): What are your thoughts on the immediate and long-term effects of physical vs. chemical sunscreen?

A (Dr. G): "Sunscreen has proven to be critical in anti-aging regimens and the thing we are starting to realize more an dmore in the United States is the importance of broad spectrum sunscreen.  Wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen on your face, hands, arms and chest on a daily basis is crucial."

"There are two types of sunscreen: physical blockers and chemical blockers.  Physical blockers contain titanium and they provide sun protection by reflecting and deflecting the sun.  In other words, they are almost like metal shields, blocking the rays and reflecting them off of your skin.   Chemical sunscreen absorbs the UV rays and that's a different mechanism of preventing your skin against UV damage.  There's a lot of controversy surrounding chemical sunscreens being somewhat toxic.  Therefore, if you are a purist, you are probably going to gear towards more of the physical blockers use of sunscreen.  For those people who under-use their sunscreen, I tell all my patients they should be applying sunscreen every morning as part of their basic skincare regimen.  The American Academy of Dermatology recommends you reapply your sunscreen every two hours."

Q (BP): What is the most common mistake/bad habit you see your patients make with their skin?

A (Dr. G): "Picking and scratching!  The reason is that literally 10 minutes in the mirror can buy you six months of hyper pigmentation.  Patients come in and complain about their pigmentation and I ask if they have been picking.  It is best to leave your skin alone."

Q (BP): Any final advice to those hoping to preserve the skin their in?

A (Dr. G): "I would say the most important thing is a healthy lifestyle.  So diet and exercise, sun protection, hydration, good skin care practices, meaning good moisturization and retinol use--those as a combo universally keep people looking really good!"

Above: Anytime I know I'll be in the sun, I make sure to apply a healthy dose of physical sunscreen of at least SPF 30 and wear a full-brimmed hat...one cannot play it too safe in the sun!
Sunscreen, shade, retinols and hydration...these are habits I can (and do!) embrace...it's encouraging to know that pursuing an anti-aging lifestyle doesn't have to be impossible!

Above: One giveaway entrant will win a jar of RoC Daily Resurfacing Disks and tube of Retinol Correxion Sensitive Eye Cream!

In honor of my partnership with RoC, I am excited to announce my first ever Beauty Professor Giveaway!  One fortunate reader will be randomly selected to win their very own RoC Daily Resurfacing Disks and RoC Retinol Correxion Sensitive Eye Cream (mailed directly to the winner from the PR firm that represents RoC).  The contest begins today and runs until 7 PM Pacific Time on 7/17/13, at which point, a winner will be chosen at random and informed via email no later than 48 hours after contest end date.  The winner will have 48 hours from the point at which the email is sent to respond via email to claim their prize and provide their mailing address.

Chanel Fall 2013 Lipsticks in Icone and Secret...Video Review and Swatches!

I recently shared my excitement with the Chanel Fall 2013 Creme Blushes and am completing my assessment of the collection by sharing the two lip colors I was compelled to procure.  My video above contains all the pontificating necessary for two shades of lipstick, so I will keep this post succinct and image heavy ; )

    I chose:

    1. Chanel Rouge Coco in Icone, a sophisticated golden beige.  Not having been a fan of this particular formula in the past, I was surprised at how opaque, hydrating and comfortable this shade is.  It feels "very late 1960's Catherine Deneuve" and, despite the obscene amount of nude lipsticks in my possession, I do not have anything exactly like this.  I get a respectable 4-6 hours of wear time from Icone...it fades evenly and looks stunning by itself or under something glossy.

    2. Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Secret, a translucent peachy pink with a slight shimmer.  This lipstick/lipbalm hybrid is extremely easy to apply, gliding on with a sort of "joie de vivre" that brightens the face effortlessly.  I was pleased with the fact that this shade is more pigmented than other Rouge Coco Shines I've swatched...it is sheer with one swipe but builds up to semi-opaque with three swipes. I picked one up for my mom as well and we are both loving applying this liberally without a mirror!

Kindly scroll on for product images, ingredients, swatches and pictures of the lip color on my face...

Above: Rouge Coco retails for $34.

Above: Swatches of Secret in direct sunlight...the lower swatch is one swipe and the upper swatch is two swipes.

The following three images depict Icone and Secret on the face both alone and mixed together in various lighting...

Above: Icone alone on the lips in window-filtered sunshine (taken indoors).
Above: Secret alone on the lips in natural outdoor, rather overcast lighting.
Above: A mixture of Icone and Secret in direct outdoor sunlight.

Bottom Line:  Icone and Secret are welcome additions to my lipstick collection. Golden beige Icone is immensely opaque and subtly sophisticated and I love the sultry yet demure energy it conveys.  As I said in my video review, it is a wonderful "grown up nude."  Secret's peachy pink sheen certainly is not groundbreaking or cutting edge, but the joy and ease with which one can apply and enjoy this shade are undeniable.  It is a perfect option for a quick swath of protective color that can be applied without the constraints of a mirror.  Both shades are delightful and I am happy I bought them...highly recommended!

Did YOU try any lip color from the Chanel Fall 2013 Collection?  Thoughts?!
